It’s Worth Rising Early for Your Engagement Session

March 10, 2020

Chicago is a bustling city. There aren’t too many public spaces that are empty during regular business hours, especially during the warmer months. I think it’s important to choose locations for engagement sessions that allow us to have a little bit of privacy. This will eliminate strangers in your photos — but more importantly — it allows you two to get comfortable in front of the camera. In general, the more people around, the harder it is for you both to truly relax, something that is often reflected in your photos. Engagement sessions can be intimidating and my goal is to help ease that stress by keeping prying eyes away.

This is why shooting early in the morning before the city wakes up is so great. We can take advantage of amazing, photogenic locations without having to worry about the crowds. Sometimes this means starting at 6 AM. Yup, that early! I’m by no means a morning person, but I’ll wake up at the crack of dawn to meet my couples downtown if it means we get the city to ourselves. This allows us to use spaces that would be impossible to work with if we were photographing later in the morning or even worse, at sunset.

For those of you that are considering a midday shoot, another benefit to the early morning is the light — people just look their best during the time when the sun is low. Shooting during the morning golden hour means I can photograph you in the most flattering light away from prying eyes. You will get that wonderful, warm glow that makes you look your best without having to worry about harsh shadows from the midday sun.

So to recap: scheduling your engagement session during the early morning can seem like a pain, but the results will be worth it. You two will be able to have fun away from lingering glances, ensuring you look your best in the natural glow of the morning.
